MFA Registration Guide

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security with the use of token (a onetime password) that will be required upon logging in to any Office 365 online account. This added layer of security aids in preventing any outside attackers from gaining access to your account. Based on Microsoft studies, your account is more than 99.9% less likely to be compromised if MFA is being utilized.

Once MFA has been enabled, your next login to a Microsoft service (e.g. Outlook, Teams) will be
prompted with a request to activate MFA. You can also “trigger” this registration and be prepared for enforcement by doing the following -

1. On your laptop, desktop or virtual desktop (not your phone), visit https://aka.ms/mfasetup

2. Login with your SSYAF account (your @ssyaf.org email address)

3. When you login you will be prompted to proceed to the registration page as shown

4. Click Next to begin Method 1: the Microsoft Authenticator app

Method 1: the Microsoft Authenticator app

1. The registration page will now say "Start by getting the app".

2. Download The Microsoft Authenticator App from the iTunes store, or the "App Catalog"  on your SSYAF iPhone. Be sure to choose the correct Authenticator app. The Microsoft Authenticator app looks exactly like this -

Note: If you don't have a SSYAF iPhone issued to you, you can use a shared SSYAF iPhone you use regularly, or use a personal cell phone. If you do not want to use a personal cell phone, please contact IT to setup using a hard token device.

3. Once you have installed the Microsoft Authenticator app, open it, and agree to the privacy
statement.

4. On the Microsoft Authenticator App on your phone, select "Scan a QR code".

5. Allow the app access to the phone camera when prompted

6. Back on the registration page on your computer, click Next to the prompt "Setup your account"
as shown (ignore the message to add an account manually for work or school, the next screen
will give you an easy QR code)

7. Scan the QR Code with your phone to the Microsoft Authenticator app.

8. If prompted to allow notifications, click allow

9. The registration will complete on your phone. Click Next

10. It will then push an approval notification to your phone to approve and test.

Once approved, registration using the Microsoft Authenticator app will be complete

11. Follow the on screen prompts to approve the notification using your phone biometrics or
passcode.

12. Click Next to begin setup of Method 2: Phone.

*If you do not get prompted to begin setting up a second method right away, it's because you're doing this ahead of enforcement. WELL DONE! Instead, it will bring you to your Security info screen.

To continue, simply click "Add sign-in method", and choose "Phone", then proceed to Method 2 instructions.
